Schoeps Microphones

LTF can supply any item from the extensive Schoeps range of microphones and accessories. By dint of our prime customer base, the film production sound mixer and TV sound recordist, the products usually stocked by ourselves are Compact Condenser Microphones, the CCM series. (See the Mic Types page for a general discussion on the types and usage of CCM microphones.)

A new introduction to the Schoeps range is the CMIT 5 U shotgun microphone that uniquely addresses many of the problems normally associated with shotgun type microphones (see discussion on microphone types.)

Further focussing on the types considered standard by our typical customer, the main version is CCM L whose cables are detachable. This is achieved by means of a screw-locking Lemo tri-axial connecter specially produced for Schoeps. All the necessary electronics are contained within the CCM body and the output at the connector is low impedance, balanced and can feed, and be powered from, any typical mixer/recorder input with 12 - 48V phantom supply. The only necessary external item being a microphone cable or tail fitted with the required Lemo connector at one end and a 3-pin XLR pattern connector at the other. CCM L series microphones are supplied as standard with such a cable, 5m in length.

The types most frequently supplied by LTF are CCM 41Lg, CCM 41SLg and CCM 8Lg. See the CCM Mics page for details.

CCM 41Lg and CCM 41SLg (LF roll off version) have made many friends for interior recording applications, especially in acoustically live situations where their directivity minimises colouration due to reflected paths. The very small dimensions of these microphones make it possible to follow a moving subject into very confined spaces with minimal headroom, something that is often not possible or far from ideal with microphones of larger physical dimensions.

Please note that where the Schoeps data for the CCM 41SLg suggests a maximum working distance for speech this assumes an idealised acoustic environment such as a radio drama studio. The opinion of most users we meet is that the LF roll off that is a feature of the CCM 41SLg is a most desirable attribute. The normal noise hazards of the location sound workplace, such as traffic rumble and structure bore building noises, mean that the bass portion of the audio spectrum is routinely sharply rolled off. Commonly this microphone is used at “normal” operating distances for dialogue recording on a boom, with more than acceptable results, such “normal” distances are greater than Schoeps recommend for absolute fidelity.

For dialogue recording in exterior situations a highly directional (usually gun-type) microphone will be used but again when the action moves into confined spaces there may not be sufficient space over or under the frame line for such a microphone. For example where a dialogue sequence starts in a driveway, moves into a porch and then through the front door into a hallway, this becomes Schoeps territory. LTF supplies Rycote shockmounts, basket windshields and Windjammers tailored to the CCM series for exterior applications. Frequently these microphones are also used on various fixed mounts for example the LTF modified Manfrotto mini Magic Arm in conjunction with Rycote shockmounts for car interior dialogue sequences.
